This week’s edition of Secrets from the Inside features Karen Schinabeck, Director of Financial Aid at Longwood University.

Briefly, what do you think is the most exciting or attractive feature of your institution?  I think our beautiful campus in historic downtown Farmville is our most attractive feature. As far as exciting, we have a young D1 athletics program complete with new logo and mascot!

What is the single most important piece of financial aid information you think students should know? Read, read, read! If students want to be informed and ensure they have the best financial aid package, they should read and follow directions on e-mails they receive from the Longwood financial aid office.

What is the most common financial aid mistake you see, and how can students and their families keep from falling into that trap? Not completing all steps of the FAFSA process. Families should completely read the FAFSA instructions, double check their responses, and make sure both the student and a parent sign using the PIN.

What is the most creative cost-saving method you’ve heard about from students? Leave the car at home and ride the Farmville Area Bus, which goes everywhere in town and is free for students.

What is your favorite cartoon character and why? Foghorn Leghorn because he takes care of the little chicken hawk!
